FRONTS FOR SCHOOLS (EDUCATION 101)

When I was a young adult, I used to live in heart of the city. Each day for over a year, as I walked to and from the parking lot where I kept my car, I would pass this small furniture store with the same white couch in the window. The store was so small I could hardly imagine how they could sell much product. The windows, that were done with no attempt to say "look at me", never seemed to change. In fact, the furniture looked dusty. I never once saw a customer walk into the store. I kept wondering how this pathetic attempt at marketing could justify being in this high rent district. One day I found out.

I passed the store with a friend and commented about what a losing venture this must be. He immediately retorted, "Oh, don't you know? This is a front for the Maffia."

At that time, I was so naive, that I needed an explanation for a "front". He explained they needed businesses to "launder" money, or justify income from an illegal endeavor such as drugs, by indicating it was earned via a legitimate business.

As I worked in our public schools from 1993-1999, I kept thinking of that furniture store. Our schools are fronts for distributing government monies amongst the power brokers. They certainly are no more about our children than that store was about furniture!
