A Word to the Wise is Sufficient
Loved Ones,

Please read this website Privacy Rights Clearinghouse and send it to as many people as you feel will benefit from it, especially those just starting careers.

If you still believe the adage, "I've got an education, and they can't take that away from me..." read this website about employee misconduct investigations and background checks. I know about it firsthand.

You know about my formal education. Yet, over the past 2 years I have applied to more than 300 employers for more than 350 different jobs. I have been turned down by each one, including Taco Bell!

If someone wants to ruin your career, all they need to do is report that you were terminated from your job, or were forced to resign, for MISCONDUCT--any kind--whether you did it or not. Here's what happens:

You apply in person, they like you, but no one calls you back.
You apply online; no one calls you back.
You broadcast your resume with letter of application saying the right things. They send a form letter (maybe).
You don't get any calls for interviews.
You apply without your ssn, and they are impressed with your credentials. The telephone relationship is great! Then you complete a formal application with your ssn and poof! You must have leprosy, because they never contact you again.

Maybe by chance, you get on somewhere, like a call center, known for its rapid turnover rate. Then, your new employer researches by the social security number you must provide. Your employer investigates you (and almost all do whether you know it or not) and learns that your file shows you were terminated for misconduct--you can't even yawn without it being a federal offense.

"Relationships." That has been the key all along, and more now than ever. Not kissing up, not brown-nosing, but maintaining positive relationships with allies in a position to help (or hurt) you. We look on the inner man, not on the outward appearance. Deal with the inner man. Enemies work through people. Only God can protect us from the WOI (workers of iniquity/inequity). Read, yes--learn, yes. But ALWAYS pray.
